Social Work Academic Lecture:Family Relationship and Social Development

Date:2016-12-14

On the 14th of December, Dr. YANG Jiazheng from the Department of Social Work and Social Administration of the University of Hong Kong was invited to provided a lecture on the issue of “Family Relationship and Social Development”.

Dr. Yang has many-year experience in social work teaching, research and consulting in Hong Kong. In this lecture, Dr. Yang introduced a large number of vivid and practical cases to introduce to the international students about marriage, family, intimacy, parent-child relationship and other family issues in Hong Kong Chinese society over the past decades. He also made a comparative analysis of the situation of Chinese people living in different countries and regions.

Dr. Yang's lecture was humorous. Within the bursts of laughter and applause, the participants have joined the discussion, shared and introduced their own national situations and cases. The classroom atmosphere was relaxed and happy, while people's point of view was sharp and thought-provoking. For example, some participants pointed out that apart from the economic inequality in family relations, women's unpaid housework and other obvious issues; sexual oppression and inequality is also an important aspect of family problems and family inequality. However, in many developing countries, especially in their home countries, to openly talk about sexual issues, is still a taboo. Our lecture provides an academic platform for students and teachers to understand the importance of family issues and their significance for women's empowerment and development, gender equality and social development.

Professor LIU Meng, Vice President of China Women's University, took part in the lecture. JIANG Haiyan, a junior researcher from the School of Social Development and Public Policy of Beijing Normal University, also attended the lecture and shared her work on family relations.
